Remaining Silent in Response to an Insult

The Gemara states in the name of Rabbi Ila’ah, “The world exists only in the merit of those who do not respond when attacked, as it says, ‘He hangs the world on nothingness (Bileema).’

This demand, to remain silent when being attacked, is one of the most difficult acts a person can do. However, it is made easier if he can distract himself at a critical moment by thinking of something else, humming a tune, or some other similar method. This will remove some of the heat of the argument and help him refrain from responding.

The Rebbe once prevailed upon one of the students to withdraw from a confrontation by reminding the student of this. He said, “Look! You have been presented with a great and fearful opportunity. It is in your grasp, by not responding, to maintain the entire universe.”
