והתמכרתם שם לאויביך לעבדים ולשפחות ואין קונה
The Sefer Rashei B’Samim quotes his father-in-law R’ Yitschak of Radwil. As he was about to pass from this world, his father, R’ Mechel of Zlotchov appeared to him and explained the posuk: The Gemara (סנהדרין ק"א) refers to Nebuchadnezer as “my slave”. Since ה' knew that the Jewish people would be given over to him, He wanted to assure that they would never be separated from Him. “a slave’s possessions belong to his master”. Since Nebuchadnezer is ה'’s slave, the Jewish people remain in the domain of ה', even though they might be enslaved to Nebuchadnezer.
This is the explanation of the posuk. ה' fortold “you will be sold to slaves”. Your masters are my slaves, and as such, you are still under My control.
We can take encouragement from this, especially since this Parsha is always read during Elul. A person can despair from doing Teshuva. He can imagine that he is caught up in the clutches of the Yetzer Hara, with no way to escape. From the Posuk, we see that the Yetzer Hara is nothing more than a slave of ה'. Even if a person is influenced by the Yetzer Hara – so much as to be “enslaved” – he is nonetheless still in ה'’s possession.
